Mildred’s is something of a vegetarian institution in London, having served up vegetarian cuisine from the heart of Soho for more than 12 years now. The best compliment you can pay Mildred’s is that its customers aren’t just vegetarians, despite the fact that there is no meat on the menu. So good are their vegetarian dishes that omnivores flock there all the time. The atmosphere is always lively and a recent refurbishment has seen the décor updated into a stunning wood panelled dining room with elegant and well thought out lighting.

But it is the food that is most important and what food they serve at Mildred’s! My favourite London restaurant, Mildred’s is one of those places where vegetarians and vegans will never feel like they are missing out. Every dish is vegetarian and there is a vegan option for every single dish too. Starters are incredible and there are too many delights to list, bit it is the main courses where the real art lies. Try the sweet potato and cashew nut curry for a real example of just how good vegetarian cooking can be. Alternatively, try the veggie burgers to see what real quality vegetarian burgers should taste like – not tepid meat replacements but towers of vegetable patties, salad, delicious sauces (even the basil mayo is vegan) on exquisite rolls. Others at out table had the noodles and the pie and mash and both sat suitably quietly, stuffing their faces before letting out a ridiculously contented sigh at the end.

If you’ve got any room left, and you should try and leave some, then you are in for a treat. I had the rhubarb compote, which was a revelation, particularly as I’m not normally a massive rhubarb fan, and I also stole a quick spoonful of my girlfriend’s ginger tofu cheesecake which was as good as it was well presented.

The meal was accompanied by a robust vegan wine (of which I am not normally a fan) and a few too many international beers and fun was had by all.

With friendly staff, a great atmosphere and prices that aren’t bad at all considering the location, this is a wonderful place that deserves to be here for many more years to come.
